Expanded Editorial Track
Will Cover the Latest for Editors

Once again, free paper editors have come together to provide you with great workshops and sessions covering topics you deal with every day. From discussions of ethics to workshops on photography and page layout, you will learn from the brightest in our industry – and you just may teach them a thing or two!

A group of expert free community paper industry editors have put together this awesome track of classes to advance the editorial skill of our industry. If you work in the editorial department of a free paper, you will surely want to attend to get the latest information on each topic.

EDT200 – Journalistic Ethics
Ever feel squeezed by the publisher and advertising department to publish “news” that isn’t really appropriate? Want a better understanding of what is and what is not ethical according to current journalistic standards? This session will provide an update on ethical standards that should be the basis for every editorial department’s mission.

EDT201 and EDT202 – Journalism Workshop
Get ready to brush up your journalism skills and work as this session provides an update on basic journalism, including ways to cover and present different types of stories, grammar and punctuation, and page layout for the reader’s benefit. (2 hours)

EDT203 - Becoming a Full Community Newspaper
Have you considered some editorial content, or expanding your editorial content to full community newspaper status? Taught by the Managing Editor and Chief Operating Officer of one of the fastest growing community newspapers in the country, this session will explore the investments necessary and payoff in increased readership through editorial copy. (2 hours)

EDT204 – Electronic Media
Discuss the newest ways to use the Internet for story research and how to weave your website into your publishing mission. This session will include information from the brightest editors who are making the most of electronic media.

EDT205 – Finding and Training Good People
No one finds themselves with an abundance of good people. We all suffer through the process of finding and training the best new staff member. This session will discuss how to make the most of your people, how to find the right people and how to train them efficiently.

GRF207 – Photography Skills
Want to make your photos more interesting? From the action news/sports photo to the typical “grip and grin,” learn how to set up, crop and present photos in their most interesting manner. Join the graphics track for a photography workshop led by the Savannah College of Art and Design.

EDT206 – Editor’s Open Forum
You’ve got questions; other attendees have answers. This rousing finish to the editorial track will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions, help others and make suggestions for future editorial workshops.

And all attendees are welcome to attend all general and breakout sessions throughout the AFCP conference.
